RDC Convention Draws Hundreds

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, September 21 (PIA) — Hundreds of regional and local planners regionwide have attended this year’s 3rd Annual Regional Planners Convention at Crown Pavilion here initiated by the Regional Development Council (RDC) Region 2 recently.

The event, with the theme: “Advancing Green Economy: Adopting Green Growth Strategies in Steering Local Development for Cagayan Valley”, aimed to emphasize green growth strategies as a valuable tool in local planning and to strengthen capability-building efforts of local government units through the exchange of information on the current programs and projects of the Climate Change Commission particularly on the region.

Angelo C. Santos, OIC-Regional Director of the National Economic and Development Authority, said they want to increase the level of awareness of planners on the emerging global phenomena in order to take advantage of green growth opportunities.

He encouraged planners to adopt green strategies in the formulation of future local plans and likewise enjoined the participation and commitment of stakeholders in various green initiatives and activities in the region.

Director Purita S. Licas of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) presented to the participants the joint effort of PIA-DENR on Climate Change Advocacy Campaign, its scope, duration, challenges and desired outputs.

She said climate change is the most serious and most pervasive threat facing humanity today and if left uncontrolled, impacts to human and nature are unprecedented and will continuously affect lives of future generations.

“With our intensive campaign, we are optimistic that Cagayan Valley residents will gain more awareness and understanding of this phenomenon or the ‘new normal’ that presently affects us and the whole world,” she added.

Licas also urged all participants to demonstrate possible actions in providing vulnerable communities with the right knowledge and information on the impacts of Climate Change. - PIA
